Tongue, Taste and Struggles

Tongue Map
Many of us have been taught that the human tongue may be divided into various sections when mapped according to areas of taste receptors. The tip of the tongue is the section for tasting sweet, the sides for sour and salty, and the back for bitter. Some studies however suggest that this mapping may be wrong because there is at the least a fifth basic taste.

In a health news archive from The New York Times, it was reported that besides the four basic tastes of sweet, sour, salty and bitter, there is a fifth flavor—savory. Savory can be detected in miso, soy sauce and other Asian foods, particularly those that contain monosodium glutamate. Scientists suspect there are receptors for other flavors as well and that receptors for basic tastes are not localized according to sections but spread throughout the tongue. What this means essentially is that receptors for different tastes are not confined to certain parts of the tongue. According to OneLook Dictionary, 'savory' means something “pleasing to the sense of taste” or “morally respectable or inoffensive,” and ‘savor’ refers to “flavor, taste of something” or as “derive or receive pleasure from; get enjoyment from; take pleasure in.” Cambridge Dictionary defines ‘savor’ as “to enjoy food or an experience slowly, in order to enjoy it as much as possible.”

We know what it is like to taste and savor the food of our delight, and we know what it is to desire food that whets our appetite. Not everyone however gets to experience such luxury, especially the ones who are in want or poverty. Depending on our ability and circumstances, each of us can derive satisfaction and pleasure from tasting different flavors. Some of us however may get to taste or experience less of the sweet and more of the sour, salty or bitter. More often than not, many of us experience multiple ‘flavors’ of different situations at the same time, and these are seldom confined only to an area in our lives. We may taste and enjoy an aspect of our lives, yet be struggling or suffering in other areas at the same time. Like the different flavors we taste using our tongues, our lives often face differing experiences at different time.

Whether we are presently experiencing the sweetness of a good life or facing the bitterness, sourness and saltiness amidst a multitude of difficulties, however, let us stand firm, remain calm and take things in stride. Like the way we savor and taste good food, let us also savor and taste the good times we have slowly, to enjoy it as much as possible by dwelling our minds on things joyful and happy. Beyond that, let us also derive and receive pleasure in the things we do, for this is good, respectable and inoffensive, pleasing to the sense of taste and comfort for our soul. Remember the good times, how blessed we have been, and look forward to something better for the future. Even if we are low on cash, at least look for satisfaction within lesser stress. Don't forget, after the rain comes the rainbow and after the struggles come great promises.

Let's not give up, but trust to see better times even while amid the worst of situations. Draw pleasure in the things we do and especially the things we like to do. Map out the path to see what can help bridge the gap to the dreams we dreamed and work towards it with the help of God.

Ellipsis and Em Dash

Ellipsis is represented in any piece of writing by a row of three periods or full stops (...). At times, it may overlap with the use of em dash (—).

Ellipsis is useful for omitting certain words in long speech writing, citations or quotations. When using ellipsis, however, the writer must be careful not to change the meaning of what the speaker is actually saying. This is a basic journalistic rule and ethical practice for any kind of writing. When ellipsis is used at the end of a sentence, it usually signifies something is 'to be continued ...'. If used somewhere between a sentence, it is considered an omission to shorten a sentence, often to remove words that are not critical to the objective point at hand. For example:

Before
Jane went about looking for the dog again and again, but was unable to find it.

After
Jane went about looking for the dog again ... but was unable to find it.

According to the MLA and AP style guideline, ellipsis should precede and proceed with a space for correct usage as shown above. There is a tendency for many writers to omit the space after a word, and this is not a correct usage following the standard style guides.

Em dash is represented by a longer dash (—), and should not be mistaken as figure dash (-) or en dash (–). Figure dash is used as a hyphen and en dash in a range, for example 'three to ten people' or 3–10 people.

Em dash is used in two ways, one as a break between a continuing sentence and the other at the end of sentence.

When used as a break between a continuing sentence, it sets off from the parenthetical information to indicate a break in character thought or speech. For example:

Every single thing we do—big or small—is significant in the sight of God.
When facing tough situations, the best thing to do is to first know God’s will through His word—the Bible.

When used at the end of a sentence, it usually refers to an aposiopesis—a sentence deliberately broken off and left unfinished which ending is supplied by your imagination or to give impression of unwillingness or inability to continue. For example:

"Get out, or else—!"

According to the MLA and AP style guideline, the em dash should not precede or proceed with a space for correct usage as shown above.

Art of Lasting Relationship

Act of Marriage
Some of us who are in a relationship may be wondering what the prospect is like to have a lasting marriage. Others may feel or think there is no need to be married to have a relationship since divorce is so common these days. Yet there are others who hesitate to enter into a relationship because of the many known broken marriages and their sad endings.

Marriage is all about the bonding of two becoming one. Separation causes split and the tearing away of one from the other, leaving each with only half. What has once been joined together, unfortunately, cannot become two again without hurting deep within and this usually lasts a lifetime. Remarriage, while our former half is still alive, often ends with the recurrence of a non lasting relationship that creates greater hurts than before. This is because true love once given cannot be returned without hurt, and life as we know it cannot remain the same.

Recently, I heard a sermon on 'Keys to a Fulfilling Marriage' by an itinerant preacher Raymond Davey from Sydney, Australia. He suggested three ways of keeping a marriage: Truth, Trust and Tolerance, and five actions we can take to keep a marriage: Communication, Commitment, Companionship, Communion, and Completeness. This article is adapted from the principles shared by him which I hope will help those who are planning marriage or are looking for answers to a fulfilling marriage.

Ways to Keep a Marriage

Truth is about a husband and wife always being truthful to each other. We must not hide the truth from our spouse and we must never lie. Being truthful is important because our spouses have been given the inner spirit to sense untruth, and this can give rise to a breakup.

Trust is about a husband and wife trusting each other. If a husband and wife fail to trust each other, a divorce may ensue. If a spouse is unfaithful or is faithless towards the other, his or her spirit must take heed not to break the faith.

Tolerance is about a husband and wife loving each other enough to tolerate and forebear each other's differences. Differences can come from the way we think about something, the way we do things, our behavior and other areas. These can tear relationships apart if mutual love and understanding are absent.

Actions to Take

Communication is about spending time with each other, with our children and the family. If we do not communicate and spend time with each other to have heart to heart talk and do things together, before long our presence will not be felt, and eventually we will be ignored.

Commitment is about sacrificial love. If we love our spouse, we will be ready to do anything for our spouse, even to lay down our lives.

Companionship is about being there for each other to have and to hold, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.

Communion is about our union in marriage, the dutiful honor within the marriage bed of undefiled wholesome union between man and wife only. Keeping this union undefiled and wholesome holds the key to a successful marriage.

Completeness is about keeping relationships prioritized in the following order: God, man and wife, family and children, work, ministry, and self.

No one likes a divorce, but that does not mean we should avoid marriage. We must take heed never to be faithless or to break faith or to deal treacherously. Marriage ties the two to become one flesh, so let all couples stay faithful to keep what has been joined together!

Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible—inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming. Plot Summary: Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort's immortality and destruction—the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart.

Meanwhile, the wizarding world has become a dangerous place for all enemies of the Dark Lord. The long-feared war has begun and Voldemort's Death Eaters seize control of the Ministry of Magic and even Hogwarts, terrorizing and arresting anyone who might oppose them. But the one prize they still seek is the one most valuable to Voldemort: Harry Porter. The Chosen One has become the hunted one as the Death Eaters search for Harry with orders to bring him to Voldemort... alive.

Harry's only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort finds him. But as he searches for clues, he uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale—the legend of the Deathly Hallows. And if the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks.

Little does Harry know that his future has already been decided by his past when, on that fateful day, he became "the Boy Who Lived." No longer just a boy, Harry Potter is drawing ever closer to the task for which he has been preparing since the day he first stepped into Hogwarts: the ultimate battle with Voldemort.

Fare Heights

Pay by Distance
Ever since the public transport fare height from July 3, my usual once a week $20 top-up of EZlink has doubled.

The so-called travel fare by distance is a way to increase fare by justifying that more people are benefiting from lower fare if they transfer between different types of public transportation. This, in my humble opinion, is a rather stupid idea for many because it means more time wasted, and Time is Money!

I, for one, travel a straight route via the MRT train to and from work. This essentially means zero benefit and increased expense for me. Just some months ago, JTC also did a 'fare adjustment' to their shuttle bus service to my workplace at IBP from the Jurong East MRT station. The adjustment doubled the fare price. All in, my transport expense per month has increased exponentially. During these times when many corporations are still cutting cost and slashing or freezing employees' pay, it appears transport fare heights are simply inappropriate, yet it is happening all the time.

Over the last several days, the radio stations have brought this topic up for discussion. I see no point in this, however, because it is already a done deal and nothing is going to change. This is what people in Singapore know for a long time, for this is our country and this is our land, where things get done first before consent, so no one can later amend.
