Small Role for Spidey in Captain America III: Civil War

A History of Spider-Man’s Role in the ‘Civil War’ Comics

      MARCH 11, 2016

Possible SPOILERS ahead!
With Spider-Man returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, let’s take an in-depth look at what his role was in the original Civil War comic book arc (which is serving as the basis for Captain America: Civil War), how he impacted that storyline, and what this may mean for the future.
Humble Beginnings
Before Civil War began in the Marvel comic book universe, Peter Parker had finally taken his place among the Avengers. For nearly all of his superhero career, Spider-Man had worked on his own. Adverse to groups in general, Peter never found himself a “team player” — whenever he had worked together with other heroes, he was quick to make this point known. One example was an early adventure (taking place in the comic series Avengers, issues #314 to 318 respectively) in which Spidey followed the Avengers into space, defeated the current Guardians of the Galaxy foe, Nebula, and then when he was offered membership, declined, stating that it was a bit too over his head. Another example was in the first issue of his solo series,Amazing Spider-Man #1, in which Spidey encounters the Fantastic Four and demands membership, only to be told that the gig doesn’t come with a paycheck, and so he declines.

spider-man-marvel-cinematic-universeMany years later, though, Spider-Man finally found himself on a newer incarnation of the team, alongside other heroes such as Wolverine, Spider-Woman, and Luke Cage. During this time, Peter, along with his wife Mary Jane and Aunt May, began working directly for Tony Stark as his right hand man. It was around this tenure that ruminations of a “Superhero Registration Act” began to murmur among the ranks of the United States Congress. Iron Man, realizing that some bad juju was beginning to form, tried nipping it in the bud by taking Peter along with him to Washington, D.C. in an attempt to talk some sense into the politicians. As well as making Peter his number two, he also redesigned Spidey’s costume, which many dub the “Iron Spider” suit. The suit not only looked closer to Iron Man’s armor, it also gave Peter a slew of new powers such as internet access, the ability to fly, and three mechanical legs that shot from his back (why they didn’t give him four to fit in with the spider-motif is beyond me).
When Peter and Tony arrive, Spidey decides to take the stand in costume, and does his best to convince the bigwigs of their potential mistake. Shocking to no one, it doesn’t go that well, as Peter’s testimony isn’t admissible unless he gives his real name. Defeated, the two leave and begin to make preparations for the possible passing of the Superhero Registration Act, which happens sooner than expected thanks to a group of inexperienced heroes, named the New Warriors, inadvertently causing the destruction of a school in Stanford, Connecticut.
Whose Side Are You On?
spider-man-civil-war-comic-image-3
When Civil War began, there was no one who had more to lose than Spider-Man. Many heroes at this time held public identities and Spidey was one of the only ones who had about a zillion enemies who were chomping at the bit to learn who was under the mask. With Captain America fighting against the Registration Act, Tony continued to keep Peter under his wing as he rallied his own band of heroes to push through a program that would see them work directly for the U.S. government. Stark, early in the series, takes Peter to the side and convinces him that revealing his secret identity to the public would work wonders for the cause. After some soul-searching and some consulting with his family, Peter decides that it’s time to reveal himself to the world, calls a press conference, and reveals that he is Spider-Man.

The world gasps, the Anti-Registration heroes group takes a heavy blow, and Google literally breaks as everyone tries to figure out who Peter Parker is. The Pro-Registration heroes, along with Peter and Tony, continue to hunt down super villains, as well as the heroes who refuse to register themselves with the government. In one of the first of many giant showdowns between the two factions, Iron Man unleashes a clone of Thor that goes haywire and murders Black Goliath, a hero on the Anti-Registration side of things. Horrified at what has transpired, thinking they had everything under control, Peter takes his family underground, slaps Stark upside the head, and begins to hightail it to safer pastures. Unfortunately, Iron Man’s side of things went a tad more nefarious than it had originally seemed, as he unleashed a cadre of super villains under his control to reel Spider-Man back in. After a heavy beating, Spidey is saved by the Punisher (of all people), brought to Captain America, loses his Iron Spider duds, and decides to join with the Anti-Registration side of things.
All Together Now
spider-man-civil-war-comic-image-4
In a last ditch attempt to set things right, Captain America and Spider-Man take what’s left of the resistance and attempt to free the heroes that were captured by Stark and Co. As they release everyone, the Pro-Registration side and the Anti-Registration side come to blows in a gigantic slugfest over the skyline of New York City. In arguably one of the coolest Spider-Man scenes of all time, Peter begins dismantling heroes and villains alike, eliciting a state of awe from everyone around him. Ultimately though, the Anti-Registration side loses, as Cap begins to realize that you can’t punch out a law, and surrenders himself to the government. Spidey, along with a good chunk of his team, decides to continue to work underground in secret. Peter even wears his old black costume in order to reflect the dire severity of his current situation.

For awhile, the Marvel Universe is changed, and heroes who are registered become the top dogs, while heroes who are not are forced to fight with villains, avoid the law, and take on a much larger population of Pro-Reg backers. Much like everything in comics though, this status was only temporary, and Spider-Man eventually found himself regaining his secret identity and losing his marriage thanks to a weird spell created by Dr. Strange and the shenanigans of Satan (don’t ask).
Ultimately, its still not confirmed as to how much of a role Spidey will in fact have inCaptain America: Civil War, and which of the events from the comic will happen, but it’s quite something to see that this is all really coming together, and Spider-Man will be swinging alongside the Avengers in the next few years.

Upcoming Movie: Left Behind

New 'Left Behind' movie will present the rapture with 'clarity;' new trailer released

Producer and writer Paul Lalonde said film will be 'bigger and better' than the last.

Published 06 August 2014 | Brownie Marie

Left Behind
A new trailer was released for the October 3 "Left Behind" film, the latest in a series of movies about the rapture.

This fall's film stars Nicolas Cage and Chad Michael Murray in a more blockbuster version of the popular Christian film series, The Blaze reports.

"A small group of survivors are left behind after millions of people suddenly vanish and the world is plunged into chaos and destruction," the film's synopsis reads on its IMDB page.

The sudden disappearance is the calling of Christians to heaven to be with the Lord, while those left behind face confusion and havoc.

Nicholas Cage plays a pilot, and Chad Michael Murray a journalist who must come to grips with life on Earth after the rapture. "Left Behind" also stars Lea Thompson, Nicky Whelan, Jordin Sparks, Quinton Aaron, and others.

The newest "Left Behind" installment is quite different from the original Kirk Cameron release 14 years ago.

"The reason to bring 'Left Behind' back is [two-fold]: one is to make it bigger and better, so that we can have a broader reach and a shot at a broader audience," producer and writer Paul Lalonde told The Blaze in April. "The first time we did it it was a straight to DVD production."

Religion films, and the rapture, are popular topics in the mainstream media as of late.

HBO series "The Leftovers" follows the lives of people in a fictional New York town who are left behind after their loved ones disappear. The cause for the disappearance is unknown, although the series' premise is similar to "Left Behind".

"The Leftovers" does not have a faith-based approach, however. Some children and pastors remain while other, more unsavory characters, have been taken in the "Sudden Departure".  Families are splintered and mankind becomes increasingly carnal.

Lalonde said the new "Left Behind" film will meet Christian audiences' approval, however.

"I think a lot of the core Christian audience, I think they're going to be surprised at the clarity with which we presented the rapture," he said. "I think people are expecting it to be completely buried and barely mentioned."

Avatar 2, 3 and 4 to screen from 2016

Avatar 2 is set for release in 2016, Avatar 3 in 2017 and Avatar 4 in 2018. The three movies will be shot back-to-back over the course of about a year, with filming set to begin on Avatar 2 in October 2014, according to ScreenRant.com.

Zoe Saldana & Sam Worthington Confirmed for Three ‘Avatar’ Sequels’
by H. Shaw-Williams

Avatar Sequels

The movie release schedule for 2015 is already staggering under the weight of a number of huge sequels, from The Avengers: Age of Ultron to Star Wars: Episode VII, so it’s something of a relief that the master of box office profit, James Cameron, is saving the follow-up to his sci-fi magnum opus Avatar until 2016.

Because over four years have passed since the release of Avatar, it’s probably necessary to reaffirm a few details about the sequels, even the ones that seem obvious. Twentieth Century Fox has done just that with the announcement that Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington will reprise their roles as Neytiri and Jake Sully in the three upcoming Avatar sequels.

Both Worthington and Saldana, who weren’t too well-known prior to their casting in Avatar, have enjoyed healthy careers since its release. Saldana has seen a little more of the spotlight and is currently involved in two additional franchises, starring as Uhura in J.J. Abrams’ rebooted Star Trek universe and as Gamora in James Gunn’s upcoming Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy. Meanwhile, Worthington has played the lead in both Clash of the Titans and Wrath of the Titans. Since Avatar remains the highest-grossing film of all time, however, it’s doubtful that either actor would be hesitant to get back into the franchise.

Despite the long wait for Avatar 2, these three sequels are currently set to release in quick succession. Avatar 2 will be released in 2016, Avatar 3 in 2017 and Avatar 4 in 2018, and the three movies will be shot back-to-back over the course of about a year, with filming set to begin on Avatar 2 in October of this year.

Even if you’re not a fan of Avatar, there’s no denying that Cameron pushed visual effects forward massively during the making of it. His technique of using a boom-mounted camera to capture the actors’ facial expressions for animators to use later has since been widely popularized in movies like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and also in the video game industry with recent releases like The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls.

With that in mind, it will be interesting to see how Cameron handles Avatar 2, which is said to be set largely in the oceans of Pandora and will almost certainly push the envelope when it comes to creating visual effects for underwater worlds.

_____

Avatar 2 is scheduled for release in December 2016, Avatar 3 in December 2017, and Avatar 4 lastly in December 2018.

Gadgets in the Movies

News from ScreenJunkies.com ...

7 Best Homemade Gadgets In Action Movies

Tuesday, October 30 by

At the end of a long month, there’s very little better than kicking back and indulging in a long article about movie gadgets. Good news! It’s happening RIGHT NOW. We’ve scoured some of the most iconic action films (and one drama with a crazy-ass gadget…see if you can spot it) and from them harvested some of the most bad-ass weaponized contraptions of all time. Sure, the gadgets listed aren’t always designed for destruction, but we feel that it’s always a device’s highest and best use. Enjoy.

Peter Parker’s Web Slingers – The Amazing Spider-Man

In the latest edition of Spider-Man, coming out on Blu-ray™ and DVD November 9, Parker takes the easy way out and builds mechanical web slingers, rather than develop them genetically, like a TRUE superhero. Just kidding. I actually find the mechanical web slingers much more impressive than the evolved ones, if only because this Peter Parker had to work to develop them, rather than just let it happen to him like another Spider-Man portrayer. Let’s just call him “Toby M.” for the sake of anonymity.

Batterang – The Batman Movies and TV Show

What’s remarkable about this homemade gadget is that it simply defies explanation. It explodes, it sometimes returns, sometimes it’s remote controlled, and it can travel incredible distances at ridiculous speeds. Why? Because Batman. That’s why.
The Tim Burton and Chris Nolan installments have done their best to distance themselves from the campy TV show, but no one can resist the subdued charm of the batterang. Not sure if I should capitalize “batterang…”

Ash’s Chainsaw Hand – Evil Dead 2

While it might not be the most ingenious weapon, it is the most hard-core and bad ass. In the series, Ash (played by Bruce Campbell) undergoes a series of unfortunate catastrophes that cause his hand to be possessed, then cause him to cut it off, replacing it with a chainsaw. It’s not exactly rocket science, but, coming from a guy that calls a shotgun his “boom stick,” it’s to be expected.

The Bolt Shooter – The Good Son

Sometimes bad people make great weapons, and nowhere is that more apparent than in The Good Son, a film that stars Macauley Culkin as the bad guy (boy). And oh, is he ever bad. He does lots of terrible things, like causing wrecks on the freeways by throwing dummies off of bridges, but the most heartless thing he can muster up is taking out a ferocious dog with a weird bolt-gun-crossbow hybrid. He’s a horrible, horrible boy, but his fabrication abilities are off the charts.

Charlie Kelly’s Rat-Bashing Stick – It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

(I am aware this isn’t his actual rat stick, but I figured an action sequence was more profound than gadget accuracy.)
When you kill as many rats as Charlie does, you get that thousand-yard stare in your eyes that comes hand-in-hand with the crushing pain of recognizing your own mortality. Fortunately for Charlie, killing rat families just got a whole lot easier with his rat-bashing stick, a modified baseball bat that features a whole slew of pointy nails and a chain or something. It’s probably the crudest device on this list, but when you see how it warms Charlie’s heart, it might also be the most endearing!

Data’s Telescoping Boxing Glove – The Goonies

I’ll be honest. This is the first device that came to mind, but I’m having a really hard time coming to terms with the efficacy of it. First of all, if you’re going to punch someone to cause them harm, using a padded glove to do it sort of defeats the purpose and mitigates the damage done. Sort of cartoon-y for a film that otherwise offers a sincere and real look at a, um, group of kids that are hunting for treasure and who accidentally stumble upon a pirate armada.
Ok. So the boxing glove is probably in keeping with the premise of the movie.

The Proton Pack – Ghostbusters

Please don’t tell me how a Proton Pack works. Not interested. All I know is that they suck ghosts into a backpack, where they are held until it’s time to more or less incinerate them in a big ghost oven. Or something like that. You know how I know these Proton Packs are homemade? Well, for one, they look like crap. And two, they’re not foolproof. In fact, they’re downright dangerous.
Never ever cross the streams of two Proton Packs. You won’t like the result.

Movie: The Avengers

From the Set: The Avengers Assemble in Albuquerque
Source: SuperHeroHype
April 2, 2012

Movie: The AvengersBy now you've probably already seen the teaser, the trailer, the Super Bowl spot and possibly even more footage and photos from Marvel's The Avengers, the culmination of five years of planning by Marvel Studios to create a Marvel Movie Universe based on the popular Marvel Comics characters, some of which are nearly 70 years old.

Back in June 2011, there were so many questions about how an Avengers movie might work. At that time, we hadn't even seen Captain America: The First Avenger yet and weren't even sure if Chris Evans would work as Cap. We were especially curious to know what the dynamics would be like between the various members of the group as played by actors with a wide range from experienced vets like Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. to newcomers like Chris Hemsworth, at the time who we'd only seen in Thor.

Might we see Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark giving a dressing down to Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye? Would Chris Hemsworth be able to maintain his presence as the boisterous and bombastic Thor when facing such powerhouse heavyweights like Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury?

With that in mind, it was a no-brainer when Marvel's new parent company Disney invited SuperHeroHype to visit the Albuquerque, New Mexico sets where the production had taken over ABQ Studios. We're happy to say that we were able to get many answers as we joined a group of select online journalists to talk to most of the principal cast including Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, Scarlett Johansson and newbie Jeremy Renner--we even got to see them in action as Black Widow and Hawkeye--Mark Ruffalo, as well as the filmmakers, director Joss Whedon and producer Kevin Feige. While we didn't get to see or talk to Samuel L. Jackson or new girl Cobie Smulders, who plays Nick Fury's right-hand Maria Hill, we also got to spend a ton of time with Clark Gregg, whose Agent Coulson first introduced the concept of S.H.I.E.L.D. back in 2008's Iron Man.

The results were two crazy days of immersion into the movie world of the Avengers, but before we could go anywhere or anywhere, we had to face Barry, Marvel Studios' head of security, who made us sign a stack of paperwork promising to keep everything we saw a secret until a time deemed more appropriate, which lucky you... is right now!

You can read the full set report over on SuperHeroHype or check out individual interviews by clicking on the appropriate link below:

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans / Tony Stark and Captain America
Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner / Black Widow and Hawkeye
Mark Ruffalo / Bruce Banner aka The Hulk

Marvel's The Avengers is out in 2D, 3D and 3D IMAX on Friday, May 4.

Spider-Man Movie Update

This morning brings a slew of news from 'The Amazing Spider-Man,' including new images, intel on Peter Parker's web shooters, and some insight from Emma Stone and Mark Webb in video form.

Courtesy of Empire, check out a great interview package with Emma Stone, who dishes on Andrew Garfield's transformation into 17 year old Peter Parker, plus hear from producer Avi Arad and director Marc Webb:

Webb also spoke with the LA Times Hero Complex about the costume design and the decision to include Peter Parker's homemade web-shooters in the story. He explains that the web-shooters are device to 'dramatize Peter’s intellect,' adding:

“We paid attention to the question of ‘How would a kid make it?’ And obviously we took some license with it. We also wanted a design that would make the body longer and more lithe, more of an acrobat, someone incredibly agile, and the legs of the spider [symbol on the chest] were something we used to emphasize that. We made a bunch of different suits for different lighting conditions. I wanted something that worked in the night a little better. We paid attention to that and also made the webbing [on the costume] a little bit darker. With the costume and the web-shooters we wanted to emphasize that these are things that Peter Parker made and that he is special himself even if he feels like he’s an outsider.”

Read the full piece here.

Finally, Slashfilm debuted six high res images from the film, below. See a few great shots of the Spidey suit, plus Peter cozying up to Gwen, and some subway acrobatics:
